The Spirit of Andrews
Giving back and CSR aren’t just policies or things we pay lip service to. They are what we are all about.
Cecil Jackson Cole founded Andrews in 1946 as a way to fund charitable work around the world. Owned by two charitable trusts, we are delighted to be continuing the work of our founder, adhering to his vision over 70 years after he initially pioneered it.
ACT funds organisations built around a big idea; an idea that has the potential to make real changes to the lives of disadvantaged or vulnerable people. Following the passion of our founder, we operate a venture philanthropy approach, supporting young organisations as vehicles for social change. We take risks but then roll our sleeves up to work alongside those we fund.
Currently, the Andrews Charitable Trust is focused on three funding programmes:
As property professionals, we are passionate about using our knowledge and expertise to tackle cycles of deprivation and multiple disadvantages by addressing the links between housing and poverty.
Housing, whether rent or mortgage payments, is the single biggest cost for many households. In the UK, the proportion of people in the poorest fifth of the working-age population who spend more than a third of their income on housing costs has risen from 39% to 47% in the decade from 2006 – 2016. This has been driven in part by the rise in the number of people renting in the private sector, where costs are highest.
We are tackling housing-related poverty and aspire to a world where everyone has a home that they can afford, which is safe, secure and part of a thriving, inclusive and sustainable community. So we support inspirational social entrepreneurs to establish their own organisations, particularly innovative and early-stage ventures. We consider impactful innovations at various stages of development and look for strong, experienced, capable and passionate leadership.
We offer grants of £2,000 to community projects in our branch catchment area that support disadvantaged or marginalised people of all faiths and none.
That includes supporting innovative projects that offer practical help to others in the spirit of Christian compassion beyond the church.
Launched in 2016 to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Andrews Property Group, [establish] leverages the resources and charity support skills of ACT with the Andrews professional expertise to support young people who have been through the care system.
The aim is to purchase one house every year for the next 50 years within the area covered by our branch network. Working in partnership with local youth housing organisations, we’re making good quality accommodation available along with on-going personal support to help young people get into work and be independent.
