Our story

The Andrews story begins in 1946 when Cecil Jackson-Cole (CJC) bought his father out of his furniture shop on Highbury Corner and established his first branch.

He used funds and seconded personnel from the business to establish the world’s first overseas aid agency, Oxfam. And then he did it again with Help the Aged and Action Aid.

Today, his legacy is even bigger: CJC practically invented the professional charity sector.

Before he died in 1979, CJC placed Andrews into the ownership of charitable trusts which continue to receive 100% of the profits not reinvested into the business. The trusts use these profits to seed-fund new and innovative charity projects.

Underpinning all of this charitable success is CJC’s business acumen in spotting the growing market for residential property and attentive personal service. Back then, the property market as we know it today was just beginning, making Andrews one of the first and few remaining regional estate agency networks.

And our founding principles are still firmly at the heart of our business:

Social Responsibility, Built In

Today many businesses see CSR activity as a nice to have. Because we are owned by two charitable trusts, our commercial success naturally supports and enables our Corporate Social Responsibility.

Challenging the Status Quo

The very spirit of Andrews, we started out by seeing the opportunity to replace the limited residential sales service provided by chartered surveyors with a fast, friendly service that would be popular with the growing number of home owners. This thinking also revolutionised the charity sector and continues to make Andrews a culture of getting better every day.

Recruiting Principled People

We still strongly believe that a culture of social and moral responsibility is important in our marketplace and to our customers. So we continue to seek out colleagues not necessarily for their qualifications or experience, but for their passion and purpose, energy and empathy, and ability to balance commerciality with clear customer focus.
